18-Dec-2004

PESHAWAR, Dec 17 (THE DAWAN): The people's Party Parliamentarians have rejected the NA-35 by-election result. Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, the PPP provincial president, Rahim Dad Khan, said that both federal and provincial governments misused state machinery to secure the National Assembly seat.

The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) candidate, Mr Bakhtiar Maani, won the by-poll, defeating Engineer Hamayun and Salim Saifullah of the PPP and the PML. Accompanied by MPA Syed Zahir Shah, the PPP leader termed the by-poll an engineered election in which the total turnout was 30 to 33 per cent.

He said that Mr Maani got only 18 per cent votes. He said that the federal and provincial governments had announced millions of rupees for development schemes in Malakand Agency just to attract voters in favour of their candidates.
