An Interview With Benazir By Rai Muzammal Hussain Abid. Victory News, Karachi.
(17th August, 2002)

Chairperson of PPP and ex Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto said we will win clean a sweeping victory in the coming elections.

"This regime can not stop me or my party from coming into power", she said in giving an interview to VN Pakistan's Content Editor Rai Muzammal Hussain Abid.

Ms Benazir further said:

Q1
VN: Do you think that the Pakistan regime will allow you to take part in the coming election?

" The military regime will do its best to stop me through its edicts and other non constitutional means. Their activities throw into question the entire credibility of the electoral process. Pakistan needs peace to build stability inside the country and on its borders."

Q2
VN: Can you afford to return to Pakistan when this regime is using its whole power to isolate you from Pakistan politics?

"There are risks involved in returning. If I can contest, I would like to go back."

Q3
VN: Pakistan 's public is waiting for you. When will you comeback?

" I wish I could answer. My participation depends on a host of factors, some of which are beyond my control. I will make an announcement before returning."

Q4
VN: Your views about the war on terrorism?

" It's necessary to end the forces of militancy, extremism and terrorism. Stability and security of Pakistan and the South Asian world, as well as its prosperity, depends on ensuring harmony between people, races and religions."

Q5
VN: Will you join (PPP) MAA (Muttahida Majlis Ammal) in the election?

" The answer to this can be given by the four Ps. That is the PPPP ."

Q6
VN: What is your stand on the Kashmir issue in the present situation?

" After September 11th, the world community was unprepared to distinguish between a freedom struggle by an occupied people and terrorism. Occupied people need to keep this in mind when devising strategies to achieve their objectives.

I believe that we should follow a peaceful and political solution with the Kashmir dispute. PPP proposes that without prejudice to the U N Security Council Resolutions, India and Pakistan negotiate safe and open borders to unite the Kashmiris socially. Dialogue between India and the Kashmiri All Parties Hurriyat Conference as well as with the APHC and Pakistan could help in confidence building steps.

Q7
VN: Will PPP win a majority in the elections.

"Yes. Most certainly PPP would sweep a fair election. The People of Pakistan want a government that is responsive to the poor and needy and helps end suffering and misery."
